       HELP YOURSELF TO ME

I see the sadness of a lonely dreamer, it's something you can't hide
You've done your best to be a true believer, but you're not satisfied
Don't start thinking no-one understands
Come on, take my hand

If you can't help yourself, help yourself to me
I think I know how you feel, once I was down on my knees
Now I'm standing strong enough to help someone in need
So if you can't help yourself, help yourself to me

Anytime you need a friendly shoulder, you can lean on mine
And if you ever think of starting over, I'll be by your side
I'm with you no matter what it takes
I've been in your place

If you can't help yourself, help yourself to me
I think I know how you feel, once I was down on my knees
Now I'm standing strong enough to help someone in need
So if you can't help yourself,
     If you can't help yourself,
If you can't help yourself, help yourself to me

"Big Al" told me that this song helped get him signed to a songwriting deal at Polygram/Seven Angels.  Al was (is?) drummer for Kostas (a well-known songwriter).
This was the first of a number of songs that Big Al and I wrote together.  We met at Shoney's and  he shared a handful of title ideas with me.  I chose to write this one.  I wrote the rest of the song myself.  For the record, we wrote some that way - Al supplied titles - but Al started writing more and more in our collaborations as time went on.  He worked REALLY hard at writing, and I saw him become a fine writer.
