WESTERN MOVIES

We ride into town in the morning
Being herded like cattle at dawn
But I break from the gang
Make a run for the bank
Hand the teller a note, then I'm gone

With the sun on my back
     I'm free at last
To answer the call of the wild

Just like in old Western Movies
Where each day is a different plot
I like to pretend I'm the hero
But sometimes I'm more of an outlaw
Just like in old Western Movies

Later on the sun paints a picture
As a backdrop for a rundown saloon
I go in for a drink
Pull out my six-string
Start singin' the crowd's favorite tunes

     Then gone like the wind
'Fore the night came to an end
I rode away with a smile

Just like in old Western Movies
Where each day is a different plot
I like to pretend I'm the hero
But sometimes I'm more of an outlaw
Just like in old Western Movies

Just like in old Western Movies
          Just like . . . Western Movies

I had the title for this and a little bit of the music since 2001.  I specifically wanted to write it as the title song for the Western Movies album.  In our December, 2005 writing sessions at my place, my friend Bill Warrington and I finally fleshed this one out.

The modern day 'cowboy' has become part of the cattle drive known as the morning commute.   But he breaks free to 'rob' a bank (with a withdrawal slip), and rides off into the sunset - "just like in old Western Movies" - Hopefully setting the stage for the rest of the album . . . a series of 'fantasy' Western vignettes, or 'movies' .
