                          MY SHORT-LIVED LIFE OF CRIME

I dug into my dresser drawer
Wrapped my fingers around my ol' forty-four
And headed out into the cold night air

I'd lost my job at the factory
Left my wife and boy without enough to eat
And that was more than I could bear

          I said, it's a hold up, it's a robbery
Give me the cash and don't follow me
But both of us had fear in our eyes
In my short-lived life of crime

Your daddy was the clerk that night
And he did what he knew was right
He tried to grab my shakin' gun

But a shot rang out and the better man fell
I knew right then that I'd lost myself
When I saw what I had done

          I said, it's a hold up, it's a robbery
Give me the cash and don't follow me
But both of us had fear in our eyes
In my short-lived life of crime

Now I'm wearin' denim for the rest of my life
And half the time, wish I wasn't alive
     But I deserve even worse

I killed your dad - wish he'd killed me
Then there wouldn't be two broken families
"Sorry" ain't a strong enough word

          I said, it's a hold up, it's a robbery
Give me the cash and don't follow me
But both of us had fear in our eyes
In my short-lived life of crime
          -  My short-lived life of crime
          -  My short-lived life of crime

Truth is . . . Moke wanted to write a song like "The Choice" (one I wrote with Larry Vail).   Moke liked that song and wanted to write something with that feel . . . and this is it!  Turned into a story of a prisoner's message to the child of his murder victim.   We wrote it over two or three sessions back in 2002.  Music was mine, the lyric of course, a collaboration.
