            OUT OF THE QUESTION

    It's out of the question
It's just too much to ask
And I'm too broken hearted to pretend
     I'm too busy cryin'
     And living in the past
Don't ask me, I can't be just your friend

It seems like just yesterday we were in love
You told me a million times back then
That your love was strong
So can you tell me what went wrong?
Why can't we be that way again?

     It's out of the question
It's just too much to ask
And I'm too broken hearted to pretend
     I'm too busy cryin'
     And living in the past
Don't ask me, I can't be just your friend

I won't stay around and let you see me cry
Wishing we could share just one more kiss
I can't stay here
Wondering how your feelings disappeared
I'm too close to the tenderness I miss

          So I'll be movin' on
I'd rather miss you when I'm gone
Than stay and play a game of make believe
          Honey it hurts too much
To be in reach, but out of touch
So I will live with memories

     It's out of the question
It's just too much to ask
And I'm too broken hearted to pretend
     I'm too busy cryin'
     And living in the past
Don't ask me, I can't be just your friend

Don't ask me, I can't be just your friend
     I can't be your friend . . .
     It's out of the question

I must give some credit to my friends at NSAI's (The Nashville Songwriter's Association International) Los Angeles group for some great critiques which helped shape this song as I was rewriting it.  (This was back before I moved to Nashville).  I remember playing it in a meeting and getting wonderful suggestions which I put to use.

As to the lyric . . . well, it's not about any specific true story . . . but, I've been there . . . haven't you?
