            IF I KNEW AN ANGEL

I know the difference
But I don't always do what's right
I've made choices
And I've made some bad ones in my life

I regret
Some things that I did yesterday
I'm not proud
But I know that I could change

     If I knew an angel
     If I knew an angel
If I knew an angel like you
Could love a man like me

I've had lessons
And I have scars that you could find
I've felt cheated
And tried to hold the hands of time

Now I'm wiser
And there are some things I understand
That just make me older
But I'd be a brand new man

     If I knew an angel
     If I knew an angel
If I knew an angel like you
Could love a man like me

     If I knew an angel
     If I knew an angel
If I knew an angel like you
Could love a man like me

If I knew an angel like you
Could love a man like me

One night, in 1995, my first year in Nashville,  I met a very sweet young lady
at the Wildhorse Saloon.  Although we hit it off, and she was very attractive,
she was 'too young', naive, and innocent.  We were only friendly
(she was real young - a college girl), but I remember that she asked me questions
while we danced.  She was trying to understand some things about men and life in general.
I was still trying to understand some things about men and life in general too,
and soon I wandered off to chase after a not-so-sweet and innocent young lady.
I remember the look on her face when I did that . . . a little hurt maybe, but
definitely curious . . . like she was trying to understand what I was doing
and why . . . a part of me was wondering the same thing.

The next day, I found myself wanting very much to communicate with the young lady
- to try to explain, apologize, and let her know that I'd choose her in a heartbeat,
if I thought I had a chance . . .
I didn't have any way of reaching her . . . so I picked up my guitar and I wrote this
song to her.  This is one of those straight from the heart things . . .
