 TALKIN' THROUGH TIN CANS

When I was in the fort, Mikey was in the bushes
With binoculars that folded up and a homemade wooden sword
Sworn to be the lookout for enemy forces
Like our sister and her best friend Paula Ford

     You had to listen hard
But when we stretched that string across the yard

We were talkin' through tin cans
And filling in what we couldn't hear
          Talkin' through tin cans
We understood each other loud and clear
When I used the secret code of spies
He knew I needed him by my side
          And we mad plans
          Man to man
          - Talkin' through tin cans

He was my best man when I married my high school sweetheart
And I called to cry on his shoulder when she got sick last year
My wife died in my arms, and I needed my brother
I got him on the line, and I whispered in his ear

     With nothing left to say
I knew he'd make the flight home right away

We were talkin' through tin cans
And filling in what we couldn't hear
          Talkin' through tin cans
We understood each other loud and clear
When I used the secret code of spies
He knew I needed him by my side
          And we mad plans
          Man to man
          - Talkin' through tin cans

          Talkin' through tin cans
          Talkin' through tin cans

I had this title for a long time and I had wanted to write it . . . wasn't sure exactly what it was about.
My friend and co-writer Bill figured that out with me.  I DO really remember using those tin cans and string.  It's a wonderful childhood memory.  And we did have a fort, and I have a brother named Mike . . . a number of the pieces of this song have some truth to them, and it's all twisted around and changed.  An ode to childhood and to brotherly love.
